The year started with two races on back to back Saturdays and this month is ending with two race weekends. First up is one of my favorite events of the year, the VertFest ski mountaineering race. What’s that you ask? Well, it’s racing up and down mountains on skis. It’s super high intensity charging uphill, then skiing back down. Then depending on your division, you may do it again. It’s a wonderful combination of racing, skiing, mountains, and fantastic people.
The weekend after that is the Birch Bay Marathon. It is supposed to be a great race when the weather is nice, but it also has a reputation for heavy wind and rain. I’m hoping for a very enjoyable run, as well as a great weekend in Bellingham.
Unlike last month where both races were just for fun, this time at least one of the races matters, at least to some extent. If things go well, the marathon should be an “easy” Boston qualifier. But I also have a history of doing well at VertFest. Common sense dictates going easy at VertFest to save up for the marathon, but it’s going to be hard. There are more than a few reasons to go all out and I have a bad track record with this type of temptation. Stay tuned.
